Folks

While out putting up Kestrel boxes in various location in Charles Co. I came upon a couple nice finds. At Allen's Fresh on Wednesday, March 29 in a wet area I had about 30 Wilson's Snipe, and three Greater Yellowlegs. Later that day on the Nitza Farm I found a nice flock of 30+ Chipping Sparrow. Both location are private farms.

The Charles County Barn Owl restoration project Mike Callahan and I are doing looks good again this year. Of the three boxes I checked recently, all three were active. One had three eggs. All boxes are on private property also.

Mike put up another box last weekend, and I plan to put up one more on Sunday if permission is granted. I plan to put up two more American Kestrel boxes in the near future. One goes up Saturday, and maybe the fifth on Sunday if the owner gets back w/ me.

On the home front, yesterday Gwen and I had our first singing Fox Sparrow around the house. This morning I heard maybe two Eastern Phoebes and one Killdeer (a flyover). Lots of bird activity this early AM w/ six of the seven common Maryland woodpeckers putting in a performance. The Flickers are the most active now w/ lots of drumming and singing.

Go to the Important Bird Area dedication at Fort Smallwood Park today if you can. It is at 1 PM and the park is free today. It also looks like a good hawk migration day w/ the SW winds.

Cheers

George
