Here is a very helpful web site for geographic location research ... it's 
the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) ...

         http://geonames.usgs.gov/redirect.html       (or just google "GNIS")

Then follow the "U.S. and territories" query link.

You can search for locations by name and after you locate them, you can 
click on various links to get different maps of the location.
