Skipping a planned walk at Druid Hill Park
in Baltimore due to a rain shower, I decided to
take a quick visit to the Liberty Dam trailhead
at Marriottsville Road in western Baltimore County
near the county line with Carroll County, the
Patapsco River just below Liberty Dam. I ended up
walking the trail to and from the Dam, and found
a single singing Louisiana Waterthrush and a single
singing Yellow-throated Warbler, both on the river
side of a wet region, an old horseshoe bend, below
the dam. I also found one Rough-winged Swallow flying
around the vicinity of the dam.

With other reports from elsewhere, these aren't state
arrivals but might be among the earliest reports this
spring from Baltimore County for the two warblers.
With the close proximity to a favorite site in
Carroll County, the presence of the birds at
Piney Run in the Marriottsville area of Carroll County
seems likely as well.

Perhaps the least-expected bird, however, was a
single drake Common Goldeneye on the river, seen
(and flushed) both going upstream to the dam and
again on my downstream return. With the close
proximity of major reservoirs nearby, I speculate
that the bird may have set down there during the
rains last night and failed to realize that much
more appropriate habitat is available nearby.
