I have lived in the sparsely-wooded end of Catonsville
since 1977 and do not recall seeing or hearing any
Whip-Poor-Wills in the area during that time. I am
happy to report that an early-rising friend, Dorn
Wagner, heard one on two consecutive mornings this
week around 5:30 AM. It was calling from a small
public park located behind the "mother-of-all water
tanks" in Westerlee. This is the surprisingly dark
and wooded neighborhood behind the retail stores and
flood-lit car dealerships on Route 40 (a 1200' TV
tower also mark the spot). Dorn did not hear the Whip
this morning.

Leakin Park provided me with good looks last weekend
of palm warblers, hermit thrushes, towhees, 4
red-tailed hawks, and a hairy woodpecker.
Interestingly, there were few other people there on
this gorgeous day.

Cheers,
