Yes, I was also surprised when a Red-breasted Nuthatch flew onto the tree right next to me, eye level, at Battery Kemble Park in DC around 4 p.m. on Saturday, 4/15, and proceeded to work its way around the trunk in a fairly leisurely fashion. Based on these recent sightings, as well as others over last fall and winter, it seems to me that the past year has been particularly good for seeing Red-breated Nuthatch in our area.

On Sunday afternoon we went to Hughes hollow, and didn't see too much, but had a
common snipe, 3 pie billed grebes, 2 blue-winged teal, broad-wing hawk and a
surprising red-breasted nuthatch. Lots of blue grey gnatcatchers serenaded us
the whole afternoon.
