Hey all, the GREAT HORNED OWLS (two juveniles this time) are
still present in Paint Branch Stream Valley Park in College
Park, PG County. Also picked up 3 new year species for the
path: EASTERN KINGBIRD, BARN SWALLOW, and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT. Looks like the GREEN HERONS may be taking up
residence again in the swamp. Other notables: a vocalizing
SAVANNAH SPARROW and a male RUSTY BLACKBIRD. Full report:

Report Details
Location name: Paint Branch Stream Valley Park
Observation date: 4/19/06
Duration: 2 hour(s) 15 minute(s)
# of people in birding party: 1
Are you reporting all the species you identified? Yes
Total # of species: 47
Observation type: Traveling Count
Start time: 7:30 AM
Distance covered: 2.5 mile(s)
Area covered: N/A
Weather had a negative effect on my ability to collect
birding information: No

Checklist diary notes:
Partly cloudy, cool. New year birds for the path: Eastern
Kingbird, Barn Swallow, and Common Yellowthroat (male). The
Green Herons are now back at the swamp. The hawk was seen
briefly perched in trees; best guess is Red-shouldered. The
gull was seen high and flying away; likely Ring-billed.
There were two juvenile Great Horned Owls this time, perched
together on a bare branch and eyeing the crows nervously. A
starling and a Red-bellied Woodpecker had a protracted
battle over (presumably) a nesting site. Nice look at the
Savannah Sparrow; vocalizations too. The male Rusty
Blackbird was distinguished from grackle by its more compact
shape and shorter tail. May have heard Belted Kingfisher and
Pileated Woodpecker.
