I visited the ANS bookstore at Woodend, Chevy Chase, MD, this
morning, to get some bird seed and to buy the new Michael O'Brien
shorebird book (I was stymied on the latter score, as the shop had
sold all of its initial supply, and I had to join the wait list).

Even though the migration is on only fitfully, I decided to take a
walk in the vicinity of Woodend, specifically on the paved trail that
leads south, and then on the narrow path that leads upstream (north)
on Rock Creek along the river's east bank. Only warblers heard/seen
were a couple of Parulas, 2 Black-throated Green, and a Northern
Waterthrush. I also heard a Red-eyed Vireo and saw one.

At a point on Rock Creek I'd gage to be not much more than a
half-mile inside the beltway there was a single YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON (an adult) perched on a fallen tree. I watched it at
length, and it did not flush even when I walked quite close. It was
not there when I returned downstream 20 minutes later, probably
flushed by a walker with an unleashed and soaking wet dog that I
passed a few minutes earlier.

I did not see a second night-heron, but it would be good to think
that we have yet another pair of night-herons nesting inside the
beltway. Whoever has this area as their Atlas block probably has a
much better read on this than I do.
