We spent the evening at Elliott Island on 4/20. Best sightings included:
10 Black-necked Stilts feeding in the perched pond west of the boat ramp;
1 Short-eared Owl (somewhat late migrant) flying high over the Pokata Creek bridge, steadily heading southwest;
Between 9:30pm-11:30pm, we made 22 stops along Elliott Island Rd:
28 Virginia Rails
23 Clapper Rails
1 Sora (calling "ker-wee" while flying overhead)
2 or 3 Black Rails (including a probable bird that called "breee" while flying overhead)
1 Barn Owl (calling overhead)
About 25-35 Canada Geese at 10 of the stops (the next management problem?)
3 foxes (1 each, usually heard barking, at 3 stops)
Zero nutria!
The night was dark without the moon (although the light pollution from Salisbury and other towns on the horizon was obvious), 60 - 56 degrees F, calm & clear.
