This critter was driving me crazy so I went seriously after it and finally
managed to track it down. It's a malfunctioning Woodthrush!
I began to suspect, since I'd hear the Woodthrush singing at the same time
and in the same direction, but the songs were so unlike it just didn't
connect. Even as I got closer, and was able to hear the Woodthrush trill
etc. after the high notes, I wasn't sure it was the same bird.

Finally got a visual on him doing it. The bird is raggedy - reminded me of
Bill the Cat, and sounds like he traded his flute for a fife. He does the
regular song sometimes, but most of the time starts it off with the two note
fife call. Never heard anything like it before.
