May Count, Saturday, May 13 in Bowie

Canada Goose 10+ ~ several flyovers heard not seen now that the leaves are full
(Great Blue Heron ? several heard high up in the woods? ~ needs to be investigated)
(Unidentified Raptor 1 flyover)
(Expected to see a flyover Red-tail more than once because the squirrels and chipmunks went nuts a couple of times.)
Mourning Dove 3+
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 ~ a male and female seen carrying away extra suet
Downy Woodpecker 4 ~ two male and two female ~ one pair was carrying away extra suet
Hairy Woodpecker 1 ~ my tailless female showed
Pileated Woodpecker 1
Great Crested Flycatcher 2+
Red-eyed Vireo 3+
Blue Jay 2+
American Crow 1
Carolina Chickadee 2
Tufted Titmouse 2 ~ one seen briefly begging and being ignored by the other
White-breasted Nuthatch 2 ~ staying close together and hiding seeds and suet
Carolina Wren 4+ ~ some have left a nest recently ~ constant companions
American Robin 5++ ~ two nest building sites were observed
Wood Thrush 3++ ~ most commonly encountered species of the day
Swainson's Thrush 2+ ~ lots of wonderful singing and some chasing
Northern Mockingbird 1 ~ singing across the street
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler 2+
Pine Warbler 1
Bay-breasted Warbler 1 ~ the surprise star of the day ~ beautiful male seen singing
Blackpoll Warbler 5+ ~ some heard, some seen
Black-and-white Warbler 1
Ovenbird 2+
Scarlet Tanager 3++ ~ constant and very lovely companions ~ 2 males seen chasing and strutting their stuff while a nearby female made soft sounds and pretended to ignore them
Northern Cardinal 3+ ~ more chasing
(Not a single sparrow!)
Brown-headed Cowbird 2+
Common Grackle 3
(Purple Finch was last seen on Sunday, May 7)
American Goldfinch 6+ ~ three of each sex seen at one time

Not birds:
Gray Squirrels
Chipmunks
Gray Tree Frogs calling
Green Frogs calling and lots seen/heard leaping into the stream
Cricket Frogs calling
Fowler's Toads trilling
Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies

All species observed between 5:30 am and 5:30 pm from the house, yard, and woods. None of my landlord's seven hummingbird feeders attracted a bird on this day. Several expected (+ hoped for) species were absent but the Swainson's Thrushes and Bay-breasted Warbler were very pleasant surprises. Total of 31 identified species ~ the species with plus signs are modest counts. A beautiful day!
