For the May count this past Saturday, I counted at several places in the
Elkton - Chesapeake City area of Cecil County, including Bethel WMA,
Courthouse Pt WMA, Williams Rd pond, my house in Elkton, and points on
the roads in between. I had a total of 64 species, notably including
- a Least Bittern at Courthouse
- single Little Blue Herons at Bethel and Courthouse
- 57 Semipalmated Plovers at Courthouse
- close-up look at a singing Canada Warbler at Bethel - the only other
migrant warblers were 1 Magnolia and 1 Yellow-rumped
- 5 Yellow-breasted Chats at Courthouse - there seems to be one on
territory every few hundred feet
There seemed to be relatively a lot of Great Crested Flycatchers
around: I counted 6 at Courthouse - very vocal, very visible. Notable
by their absence were the usually much more common Acadian Flycatchers:
I had none. Red-eyed Vireos were common at Bethel but only one was at
Courthouse - also unusual. Also notable by their virtual absence were
swallows. Usually, Bethel, Courthouse and the pond by my house are
swarming with Tree, Barn, and Rough-wingeds at this time of year, with
occasional drop-ins of Bank and Cliff. But I had only three Tree and
two Barns at Bethel and none at Courthouse or at my house. Where are
they?
