DC Audubon 2006 Birdathon results from yesterday for the DC Aububon
Team "City Flickers", (Michael Kaspar, John Beetham and Denise Ryan) had
101 birds between 5:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Full species results at the end.

We visited Rock Creek Park (RCP), Kennilworth Aquatic Gardens (KAG),
Kennilworth Park (KP), Kingman and Heritage Island, Anacostia River Park,
Potomac Point, MacMillain Reservoir, Fletchers Boathouse on the C & O
Canal and Chain Bridge before returning back to Rock Creek Park and the
golf course. We had a goal of reaching 100 birds - and using MD Osprey
postings from the previous day, had hoped the nice fallout of warblers
would help. Warbler action was slower on Saturday, but we were still able
to round up 16 warbler species in the city.

We were delighted to find a flock of 20+ mixed male and female Bobolinks,
1 Eastern Meadowlark (thanks for the heads up Rob), Blue Grosbeak, singing
Field Sparrow, and Savannah Sparrows at Kennilworth Park. Spotted and
Solitary Sandpipers were moderately plentiful around the small ponds at
KAG, and the wooded river trail was plentiful with vireos and Warblers.
We had 3 kinds of vireos singing along the trail - Yellow-throated Vireo,
White-eyed Vireo and Red-Eyed Vireos. A nice surpise Yellow-crowned Night
Heron sitting back from the trail along the river. Lots of warblers were
still singing along the trail when we arrived around 10 a.m. -
Prothonotary, Yellow, Common Yellowthroats, Magnolia, Blackburnian and
Northern Parula.
MacMillian Res was nearly empty when we dropped by.

Rock Creek Park yielded its usual good varieties of migrants and resident
birds. Based on some owl prowls from two years ago - found Woodcock on
the golf course that seem to respond to Great Horned Owl taped calls by
displaying. This year was not a disappointment and we had multiple birds
displaying.

Big misses for the day - Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle, all falcons, other
hawks, Black Vulture, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Wilson's Snipe, no terns,
only 2 kinds of gulls and no Purple Martins. Better timing on our part
and visiting Constitution Gardens and Hains point probably would have
helped, but we might have missed other species.

Returning to RCP late in the day, we found the Louisiana Waterthrush along
the creek at Broad branch Road, before going back to the Maintenance Yard
to check for the Least Flycatcher Gail mentioned was there in the
morning. If it was there, it was not singing.

Woodcock was bird 100 for the day, so we went back to the woods to try for
just one more - Eastern Screech Owl. Our taped results yielded at least
three, and sounded more like four Eastern Screech Owls vocalizing at close
range. We took that as a salute to exceeding the 100-bird goal and called
it a night.
