Hello,
On Saturday 6/3, I atlased on several Caroline blocks while trying to avoid the intermittent rain. Got a few mundane ticks and confirms, the best being adding 2 new species to Hobbs CE to bring its total to 80 species. These were a Black Duck in a farm pond on Line Rd, west of Trice Rd, and a Worm-eating Warbler on Line Rd, east of Trice Rd (also a new location Kentucky Warbler here).
More interesting was my visit to Idylwild Wildlife Area off of Noble Rd south of Smithville on Sunday morning 6/4. First, the bad news that I could reproduce the late Red-breasted Nuthatch from 5/28 (safe dates are June 1 for a reason it seems). The interesting sightings involved two different species collecting nesting material. One was a female hummingbird collecting a beak full of willow catkins. The other was a pair of Cedar Waxwings trying furiously to extract some fishing line that was tangled up in a tree. These two worked cooperatively. One collected 3 or 4 folds of the loose end and would lean back pulling on the line. It even tried flying and pulling. The other was positioned above where the line was caught on the branch, tugging on the line. They continued this way for several minutes before giving up. They moved on to collect web material from a tent caterpillar nest. Given the attention that it deserved, this has turned out to be an excellent atlas block (Hickman SW) with 87 species.
Monday evening, I did some night birding on Federalsburg NW, Hobbs SW and Hobbs CE between 9:20 - 10:50 PM and came up with absolutely nothing. But I think it is a problem of habitat. At the Dyer Rd wetland, there was a lot of thrashing about in the phrags and splashing in the water, along with some odd noises, but I had no idea as to the species, or even bird, mammal or reptile.

Good Birding,
