Belated thanks to the many people who offered suggestions for reasonably-
priced decent binoculars. I think what was most helpful was learning from 
several people that I could walk into a local store and get some, and not 
have to wait for mail (internet) order. I went to Bass Outdoor World at 
Arundel Mills (quite the emporium!). 

So many people had recommended the Nikon Monarchs that I headed straight 
for them, but I ended up with Leupold 8X42s, Wind River Olympic series. 
Very fast easy focus, waterproof, fairly lightweight, and amazing short 
range focus, around 7'. I've been out in the field with them quite a bit 
already and am very pleased. Especially enjoyed looking at a beaver this 
morning. It didn't notice me and swam close to the edge, assiduously eating 
water lily flowers. With the close focus, I could see droplets on its 
whiskers.
