Subject: Mallard Drake in Duct Tape or Vet Wrap
Maureen, I am a member of MOS in Montgomery Co. I am also a Md.
licensed wildlife rehabber. I respond to many of Second Chance
Wildlife Center's (SCWC) waterfowl rescue calls. SCWC received
their first call on this situation at the beginning of April from
DNR who had received several sitings of the bird at McKee-Becher(sp)
Wildlife Refuge off River Road along the Potomac River. The bird is
a Mallard Drake; it's body has been wrapped in either duct tape or
vet wrap & can't fly. It has consistently been sited at the first
pond on the right at the end of Hughes Road along the pathway
opposite from the parking lot. I received a call from a Virginia
woman who was birding with some out of town friends in May. She saw
the bird about 5:50pm & again about 6:30 but could not catch it.
DNR thinks someone training their dogs did it and the pond is for
dog training. I have been there twice and have not seen it. It may
be dead, but I thought birders would be the people there on a more
regular basis and may come upon it. I'll leave my number Lee Prouty
#301-460-7468, Cell: #01-219-1179 and Second Chance's #301-926-WILD.
Thank you Lee
