I notice that the "Yellow Book" indicates that the
late date for nesting is uncertain, so thought i would
pass along the behavior i observed this afternoon:
A female Pileated was poking her head out of a cavity
and calling for 20 to 25 minutes at Parklawn cemetery
in the vicinity of Rock Creek until i left the area.
She would occasionally pick at the bark outside the
cavity and extend her tongue as if to grab prey,
although i couldn't see if she was actually catching
anything.
