One of the best plants for shade that also attracts hummingbirds is 
the perennial Indian Pink,
Spigelia marilandica.

It has tubular red flowers and spreads nicely but not invasively. My 
most successful plants
have come from the U of D plant sale. The nursery Marcia recommended, 
which sounds
very nice, does not seem to carry it. I ordered some via mail order 
last year but they did
not come up this year.
