In early July I visited Pickering Creek Audubon Center with my 8-yr old
grand
daughter. I help monitor their 60 Bluebird boxes. I planned to check a few
of the easy-to-reach boxes to give Emily a chance to view some baby
Bluebirds. One of these boxes was A-2, where my previous checking has shown
a couple of Chickadee eggs. I wanted to show Emily some baby Chickadees, so
made it a point to include that box. I even told her what to expect.
When I opened the box, the Chickadee-type nest was indeed there, but when
I
touched it to get a view of contents - out popped a baby Carolina Wren! I
quickly (and fairly easily) caught the wren on the ground - after closing
the front of the box - and was then able to let Emily closely examine the
baby wren,
including a few friendly petting strokes on its head - then I slipped it
back into the nest with its three siblings - closed the box - and
carefully told it to stay there until it got a bit older. Emily was
delighted with
the whole scene. She was similarly thrilled to get close-up looks at baby
Bluebirds in
boxes B-10 and B-12.
