The family of COOPER'S HAWKS in my backyard in Darnestown, Mont Co., MD continues their antics. The 2 fledglings and the parents call almost continuously to each other, though remain extremely difficult to see unless they are flapping between trees. This morning I flushed one from a row of evergreens along the side of the property, and it took off across the neighbor's yard carrying an enormous dead branch in its talons. The branch was about three times the length of the hawk, with lots of twigs sticking out. The fledglings fly much faster and farther than two days ago. The songbirds are starting to give them a wide berth. We had a real explosion of chipmunks around the house this spring and summer, but they have suddenly become really scarce.
Good birding -
