It's hard to believe that warbler migration is already upon us in early
August, but looking at atlas safe dates, most of them end for warblers
sometime in July, meaning these birds can be expected to start moving
shortly thereafter. While atlasing near Tilghman Island in Talbot Co. on
Sunday (8/6), I saw a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER in a wooded area mixed in with
some common birds; this is nowhere close to where these warblers nest.

Hi Stan and all,
My wife and I just this afternoon returned from a week + trip to Florida,
mostly family related so I did very little actual birding. However, I did
spend a very brief time birding in my mothers back yard a bit NE of Orlando,
yesterday and the day before, in the mornings. I was surprised to see, on
Wednesday AM (August 9) a Northern Parula immature, and a female/immature A.
Redstart, as well as some other small warbler-vireo like birds which I did not get
good looks at. These birds were feeding actively rather high in the trees in
her yard. I have been birding the yard for years, at various times of the year
and have not seen either of these species there (though undoubtedely they do
breed nearby. On Thursday morning I watched a female Black & White warbler
feeding again high in a tree, which was unusual feeding behavior for this
species. Perhaps early migrants? On Thursday AM I also watched a Yellow Warbler
feeding high in an oak tree outside the nursing home where my mother lives.
This is probably more warbler species than I have seen in Central Florida in
over 30 years of on and off birding there!
PS, we flew out of Orlando International Airport into BWI on Friday AM, and
encountered not much more security than usual. They had tables set up between
baggage check and the first security gate for unacceptable items (liquids,
etc.), but security was no different than normal. After security we had an
especially long wait for our flight because we got there extra early due to the
red-alert threat level, but otherwise no problems! |
