Leakin Park
Went atlasing this evening in Leakin Park, and found an active
Eastern wood-pewee nest, with two young. Both were visible
even though the nest was 12 meters up. Both parents repeatedly
flew in to feed them. The nest was exactly as the field guides
depicted: out on a horizontal limb, squat and solid, covered with
lichens and looking like a fungus. Other birds including 5 Baltimore
orioles, at least two of them immature males, a upset brown thrasher
with a house wren within a foot of the bird also looking at us. We
also found our first fall warbler: a redstart.
