Dear All
Frank Hawkins and I did a quick look at Rock Creek Park yesterday morning
and this morning before work. The sunlight gets on to the tree tops at
about 7am and in to the best bits of the Maintenance Yard by 7.15am at the
moment and so it is feasible to do an hour of good birding and get to work
by 9am.
Yesterday, 23rd was better than I expected with the following around the
stables and in the yard: Baltimore Oriole 3, Red-eyed Vireo 2, American
Redstart 2, Canada Warbler 1 (adult), Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1, Flicker 8,
Gnatcatcher 5, Peewee 1, Empidonax sp. 1,
Indigo Bunting 4 (family party), Ruby-throated Hummingbird 3
Today was much more busy with a clear arrival of new birds: Baltimore
Oriole 15, Red-eyed Vireo 8, American Redstart 8, Magnolia Warbler 1, Blue-
winged Warbler 1 (probably 2, possibly 3), Canada Warbler 1 (seen by
Wallace only), Gnatcatcher 2, Wood Thrush 1, Peewee 5, Empidonax sp. 2,
Indigo Bunting 20, Ruby-throated Hummingbird 5+, Blue Jay 2.
Lots of more local birds about on both days including five sp of woodpecker
(incl Hairy), several juvenile House Wrens and a very nice Red-shouldered
Hawk hanging around the yard.
A nice start to the season...
Cheers
Gary
