Following up on Paul Pisano's reports, Lisa Shannon
and I went to Haines Point/East Potomac Park in DC
this afternoon, after we finally tore ourselves away
from Violette's Lock.

We saw STILT SANDPIPERS and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS in
number comparable to what he had told me (15-20 and
10-15 respectively); they were on an area of rain
ponds on the channel side of the golf course about
halfway down the golf course to the point. We didn't
see the Long-billed Dowitcher or the Ruddy Turnstone
which he had seen earlier. At the point itself, while
we were studying the gulls on the ground, a juvenal
ROYAL TERN flew in and landed. An adult-looking bird
(possibly two) flew off the point, but never landed.
We didn't expect to see (and did not see) the Sooty
Terns (1 adult, 1 immature) or juvenile Long-tailed
Jaeger seen by Paul and/or Mark (?) Parr before our
arrival. The only other terns we saw were Forster's
and Common.

This was the end of an amazing 26 hour period, which
began with my seeing the turnstone at Lake Needwood
yesterday afternoon.

Cheers,

Rob Hilton
