Beginning Saturday Sept. 16th and continuing through Monday Sept. 25th the CVP Hawkwatch will
be manned each day in anticipation of large numbers of Broad-winged hawks which pass through
every year. I plan on being at the watch site by about 8:00 am and staying until late afternoon.
Last year we had several large flights on the following dates: 9/13- 203 BWs, 9/19- 844 BWs, 9/
22- 425 BWs and 9/24- 1,412 BWs. The first big wave of this year came on Tuesday the 12th
when more than a few watch sites in Pennsylvania reported thousands of BWs counted. This flight
was inland (mountains and ridges of central Pa.). The CVP watch site is considered a coastal site
and with winds expected out of the west this weekend we could get a nice flight as the BWs are
pushed eastward. We will post our sightings each day and encourage anyone who witnesses a nice
flight to post here also.
