Gary and I took a drive today to Eastern Neck NWR. For the most part rather slow, however we did have the chance to get up very close to several sedge wrens. We also had a couple good glances at some pie billed grebes. Other than that, there was not much going on, so we headed home via Route 213 North. We were about 20 miles away from home when suddenly we heard a thump and saw feathers go everywhere. We could not believe that after such a day, we hit a bird! We never thought to pull over, it was pretty obvious from the sound that whatever we hit was not going to make it. So imagine our surprise when we got home to find a yellow billed cuckoo stuck in the grill of our car. What are the odds. Needless to say, we will not be sleeping very well tonight.
