306 BROADWINGED HAWKS streamed past my house in Darnestown, Mont. Co, between 4:00 pm and 4:15 pm; all were heading south, not southwest. The birds were invisible to the naked eye; with 10x binos they still appeared tiny, but were descending in altitude. One OSPREY at 4:20 made for a 3-osprey day, a record for the yard; and one final lone Broadwing, made for a total of 312 BROADWINGS, the second highest day recorded at our house. The final Broadwing came out of nowhere and disappeared into woods just west of the house at 4:40 - I presume it to be a set-down. 1 VESPER SPARROW in field behind the house was engaging in a dogfight with Bluebirds. At 5:45 I went to Seneca, and just upstream from the acqueduct found 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 1 OSPREY, 6 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, 4 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 1 GRAY-CHEEKED TRHUSH, and more hundreds of CHIMNEY SWIFTS, plus a spectacular sunset. 1 BARRED OWL calling along Seneca Creek at dusk capped an excellent
day. There was never a moment without a Chimney Swift in the sky from 7 am to 7 pm; thousands must have passed thru Darnestown today. Good birding - Don Simonson, Darnestown, MD
