On Sunday, October 8, The Cecil County Bird Club will be taking part in
Birdwatcher's Digest Magazine's Big Sit birding event. Our circle is
registered at the Elk Neck State Park (Turkey Point) at the lighthouse (not
at the Hawk Watch Station). This is the first time a Big Sit circle has
been registered at Turkey Point and, as far as I know, the first time the
Big Sit has been conducted in Cecil County.

I am cordially invited anyone who would like to join myself and Sean
McCandless at the circle to count birds.

A little back ground-
The Big Sit is an informal birding contest that compares bird observations
from around the world. "Sitters" count all the bird species that they can
in the allotted time frame (midnight to midnight on Oct. 8) from a 17 foot
circle. Birds may be counted if they are seen or heard from the circle.
They do not have to be identified from the circle, however. This means if
you see a bird from the circle you can then run out (or send someone else
out) to ID the bird. Counts are sent to Birdwatcher's Digest’s website and
registered. The results are then tallied and "winners" are listed. They are
some prizes for certain categories, but mostly it is a "just for fun"
event.

For more information check out the event’s website:

Our team, "The Turkey Pointers" (I think a corny name is mandatory) will be
starting around 5AM, Sunday morning. We will be staying until at least
noon. Don’t be afraid to stop by and say hello, we could use all the help
we can get! You don’t have to show up at 5AM, nor do you have to stay the
whole time.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

-Hope to see you there.
