Hi all,
We too in Ferndale (AA Co.) seemed to have endless flights of Canada Geese
from 4 to 6 p.m. this afternoon; perhaps more than a thousand birds in over
a dozen noisy V-formations passed over the house at altitudes ranging from a
couple hundred feet to well over 1000 feet. Also, a large kettle of
Broad-winged Hawks (30-40 birds) swirling around beneath the clouds--the
first I've seen from the yard this fall.
Other yard birds during the past week or two have included:
9/25--Brown Thrasher in the pokeberries with scads of robins (yard bird #98
for year)
9/30--Common Nighthawk flying over at 10 a.m.; SWAINSON'S THRUSH singing
(yes, singing) in yard (from patch of pokeberries)
10/1--E. Phoebe (#99 for year) flycatching
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER--active in our oak trees (#100 for year)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (#101 for year)--have been here every day
since, and will likely stay through November (we have lots of evergreens)
10/2--Herring Gull--first of season--adult flying west followed by brown
juvenile
10/3--White-throated Sparrow--first of season
During a hike yesterday with Charlie Kucera at UMBC, we had several Western
Palm Warblers and a Pewee actively flycatching.
