Today two charming Black Vultures were snuggling together on a
fallen Locust tree beside our yard. My wife said that eight had been in
that tree and the one beside it when she left for work earlier in the day.
Vulture roosts occur near our home every year. Most recently they
have been using trees near the corner of my entrance lane. When leaves are
off, several trees look like they are decorated with Christmas ornaments as
those big dark shapes seem to hang there. Both Black and Turkey Vultures
use those trees.
A couple of weeks ago I watched the passing of one of the endless
blackbird flocks while on the way to town, and wished I had the time to stop
and view them until the final one passed.
Last week out near my Nebraska home there were several large
swirling flocks of 'blackbirds', and for some I did stop and carefully check
for possible Yellow-headeds. None could be found, but the one mixed flock I
watched most carefully held about 60% Red-wings, 40% Starlings and a few
score of Cowbirds. Another smaller flock was nearly all cowbirds. Close
to, but not within a smaller flock of Red-wings I managed to spot three
Brewer's Blackbirds.
Yes, Janet, I vote with you - I love to see those large flocks of
'blackbirds'.

For the record, some of us really ENJOY seeing large numbers of crows,
vultures, and even grackles -- so long as they're not roosting on our
rooftops or immediately over where our cars are parked!
