Greetings,

Paul Pisano and I were birding at East Potomac Park
this morning when I spotted an adult (hrota
subspecies) Brant flying down from the Anacostia River
into the Potomac River. It landed closer to
Arlington, then swam toward us for a few minutes
before it took off downriver. This is the third Brant
I have seen in DC; I believe all of them were seen in
late October.

Later, at Kenilworth Park in northeast DC, Paul
spotted two different Vesper Sparrows; a half hour
later in a nearby part of the park he spotted two of
the same species, so he may have seen four. I saw the
first two but poorly. An American Pipit flew over the
park, a Merlin grabbed a flying bird, two male
American Kestrels tussled, an adult Bald Eagle flew
overhead. After Paul left I saw one Western Palm
Warbler among all the Yellow Palm Warblers, a Great
Egret flew around the park's edge, and a dozen or so
Chipping Sparrows were near the first parking lot.
