For those who don't have the appropriate regional literature and wonder what
these exotic Martins look like, pick up a copy of Jonathan Alderfer's Complete
Birds of North America, the companion to the National Geographic field guide.
It has excellent illustrations of Cuban, Gray-breasted, Southern and
Brown-chested Martins. Martins aside, this is a volume the inquiring birder should
own anyway. It is loaded with information, especially on subspecies
distinctions that will explain why some birds don't look quite the same in other
parts of the country as they do in your back yard or perhaps don't look exactly
like the illustrations in the guide. It also includes every species ever
recorded in North America. This is not a tome to lug in the field, but a source
of background material. No, I have no financial interest in the book, I'm
just a fan.
