Several years ago I was up at Oland Rd, Frederick County, in the summer and there were a number of Grasshopper Sparrows on territory, singing. As I was looking for them a large truck went down the road and soon after I noticed a Grasshopper Sparrow right out on the road, singing anyway. I got closer and saw it was standing next to a dead bird, which on examination proved to be a freshly-killed Grasshopper Sparrow, still warm, that must've been hit by the truck. I don't know whether the dead bird was a mate or a rival, but the sparrow came back after I moved away and sang some more at it.
