I was recently out in the field with a friend who works at National Geographic. Among other items on his agenda, he was field testing some modifications to Geographic's PDA field guide (he had it loaded on a Palm Pilot - not sure if it's compatible with other systems such as Blackberry). I had never used such a device, but was very impressed with it's abilities to call up a species description and play a song sample. Maybe a bit pricey, but if I had some extra cash floating around, I would run to the store to get one of these programs.

(BTW - My friend didn't put me up to this...)

With Christmas coming up, I thought this might be a good thing to put on my list. Am looking for a system that is fairly simple, quick to operate and rugged enough to be carried in the field. Any recommendations on what I should ask for? Comments on or off line would be greatly appreciated.
