Tuesday, Dec. 5, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. FREE! Come to the Baltimore Bird Club
monthly event to see this documentary film that demonstrates the connection
between your morning cup of coffee, the livelihoods of those who produce it,
and the stability and diversity of our natural environment. Coffee drinkers
hold in their hands the fate of farm families, communities, birds, and
entire ecosystems in coffee-growing regions of Latin America and the
Caribbean. The film features experts, students, bird lovers, coffee farmers
and workers themselves.

You are also invited to bring field-supplies to send to CECOCAFEN and
Alianza para las Areas Silvestres (ALAS) in Nicaragua coffee-country.
CECOCAFEN is a coffee co-op in the Matagalpa region, specializing in
shade-grown and fair-traded coffee. The co-op has been training young
eco-guides about birds and biodiversity. The co-op will also begin building
a cultural/environmental center early next year. The second organization,
ALAS (wings in Spanish), is an educational group in Nicaragua which
concentrates on youth education and on operating a series of important
banding stations in the country.

Needed supplies include: functioning quality binoculars (waterproof are
best), spotting scopes & tripods, backpacks (any kind whatsoever),
fanny-packs, hummingbird feeders (fairly common in Costa Rica, impossible to
find in neighboring Nicaragua), Mexican or Central American field guides,
laptop computers (sorry, no desktops), banding equipment, including
important mist-nets (for ALAS banding stations, run by qualified banders).
