Dear All
In response to emails noting the chance of Cave Swallows today, I sallied
forth with abundant energy to check all points in DC and can now report with
confidence that the DC section of the Potomac is officially clear of swallows,
interesting or otherwise.
I checked the area from Gravelly Point to Key Bridge, including Spout Run and
the area alongside Roosevelt Island, and thence to Georgetown Reservoir. It
was generally pretty quiet the only exception being many large gulls on the
move. The best birds of the day were a Great Egret at Spout Run (which
doesn't count on the DC list even if the bird is standing in the water - right?)
and a very nice full adult Lesser Black-backed Gull loitering on the causeway
at Georgetown Res.
Otherwise there were reasonable number of waterfowl including 35 Ring-necks,
2 Ruddies and 18 Buffleheads at Georgetown Res plus two groups of
Buffleheads and 2 Pied-billed Grebes on the Potomac.
It was a nice afternoon to be out but there was little sign that the cold front
had shifted any birds of real interest.
Cheers
Gary
