This afternoon walked the river trail up from Great Falls on the Maryland side.
Of particular interest were ring necked ducks in quantity, and male and female
common mergansers. Niether, of course, unusual there at this time of year but
I did make what I think was an unusual mammal sighting. A very large squirrel
with a red tail crossed the path in front of me. I think it could have only been
an eastern fox squirrel (not the Delmarva subspecies). Has anyone seen these
animals in Montgomery county or other parts of Maryland or is knowledgeable
in this regard ? This is not the first time that I saw what may have been an
eastern fox squirrel a number of years back -a brown squirrel with a distinctly
yellow belly-in my own back yard in Bannockbern, I note not far from a creek
that flows into the nearby river.
