A quick half-hour of birding at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center
produced some good birds. There were two adult Bald Eagles, one perched in
its customary tree behind an old house near the water treatment plant, and
another (perhaps its mate?) about 200 yards away in a tree along Beaver
Dam Road, about 1/3 mile off Edmonston Road.
Near the bridge over Beaver Dam Creek on Research Rd., an adult Cooper's
Hawk flew low across the road into the woods as I got out of the car. I also
saw an adult Red-shouldered and a pair of Red-tailed Hawks in the same
area. Interesting passerines included a Swamp Sparrow and a lingering Gray
Catbird eating berries.
