While loading a suet feeder in my yard around noon today in hopes of
attracting some winter species, I was treated to a view of a Green Heron.
The bird passed in front of my pier and then lit at the shoreline about 50
yards away. Back on the 18th a female Wood Duck was present in the same
region.

Last night around 9:30 at least two Great Horned Owls put on an elaborate
choral work - calling and gurgling to one-another in nearly continuous
fashion for about 10 minutes, then tapering off to more usual vocalizations
for another 20 minutes. Perhaps they were enjoying the Christmas lights in
my yard, for they were certainly perched in the walnut trees less than 30
yards from the house. Their calling paused only briefly when I stepped onto
the porch for clearer hearing, then picked right up again as if I was not
there. Quite a treat!
