 Hi Folks!

The answer is.....We are paying better attention. For years before the split a few birders took the extra time to note "Canada Goose - small races". In any reasonably large group of migrant Canadas you will find a pair of Cackling Geese. They are quite easy to find in the counties with huge wintering goose numbers: Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot, Dorchester. Pairs are typical. Several pairs in a flock are common. More than 10 in a flock is unusual. My highest count was 26 in a flock in Talbot. They have been documented in every county; but harder to find in the 3 western counties [Garrett, Allegany, Washington]. This is most likely related to the fact that few geese winter in that part of Maryland.

Good Birding!

I've noted that Cackling Geese are being reported regularly this season and
apparently in increasing numbers. Are there more of them or are we paying
better attention?
