As well as being in pairs they're also seen in family groups. A couple of years back 4 Cackling Geese frequented several spots in Montgomery County, always together. One - presumably Dad - was a bit bigger and larger-billed than the others. I believe its often the case that geese winter together as a family unit.

The answer is.....We are paying better attention. For years before the split a few birders took the extra time to note "Canada Goose - small races". In any reasonably large group of migrant Canadas you will find a pair of Cackling Geese.
