This morning (Dec 23,2006) i was sitting on my bucket behind my
house, overlooking the south end of Jug Bay, when i noticed an
odd-looking duck. It first presented as a female Wood Duck, but as i
watched it more, i noticed that it had a crest the equal of any male
Wood Duck. It also did not seem to have the distinctive white eye patch
that female Wood Ducks have. It also was behaving very oddly; i would
say nervously, with lots of darting around and flapping among the other
ducks. Eventually it flew and, in flight, showed what appeared to be
more white trim on the tips of the secondaries than i see on Wood Ducks.
I haven't found an in-flight picture of a Mandarin Duck to know if this
is a characteristic of theirs.
The light was poor, so i won't say i wasn't hallucinating, but
thought i should mention it.
