According to the most recent (2001) survey by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, on wildlife-related activities, wildlife-watching (which includes birdwatching, they don't separate it from other activities such as whale-watching) contributes almost a billion dollars annually into Maryland:

I do not have the web site immediately at hand, but google wildlife survey US F&WS and you should get it.

A 2006 survey is being finalized, I am not sure if pre-publication numbers could be obtained by the governor's office.
