Took a lunch break today to check out the Little Patuxent Oxbow Lake Nature
Preserve with Jay Sheppard. The sun was shining, but the wind was blowing.
Although the lake was completely open (no ice) there were few waterfowl on
it. The Ring-billed Ducks seemed to have left, so it must have been frozen at
some point recently. The water level is up, so the beavers must be hard at
work.
A newcomer-mammal discovered today was a River Otter. We first saw its
scat filled with fish scales. We then observed it out in the water for several
minutes swimming and catching fish.
Here's the list we saw today:
Tundra Swan #960
Canada Goose (~20)
Gadwall (~4)
Hooded Mergansers (5 m, 1 f)
Mallards (~20)
Ring-billed Gulls (~`5)
Winter Wren
