There was a winter-plumaged Red-throated Loon in the Tidal Basin in
the District of Columbia at around 10:30 a.m. this morning, Friday,
January 26. It was so pale that it could be picked out at a distance
by the naked eye. (I did use a scope!) Perhaps this was the same
bird seen by Greg Butcher et al. back on January 14.

Only other water birds in the Tidal Basin were a drake Red-Breasted
Merganser and a Pied-billed Grebe.

The big Lesser Scaup flock was sheltering from the wind by the marina
next to Fort McNair in D.C. Much too far away to se if any Greaters
were also present. The few birds that were close in at the west side
of Hains Point were definitely all Lessers.
