A late afternoon look at the small pool of open water near our house on
Leeds Creek showed one male REDHEAD (only my second sighting on this place -
one showed up in 2004), a beautiful pair of Hooded Mergansers, and 57
Mallards and around 1200 Canada Geese. Though the temperatures have been
very cold the past few days, the Mallards industriously work the water
through the night to keep a spot open. The Canada Geese stand around the
edge - perhaps encouraging them on - but the Mallards seem to be doing all
the work.
Earlier in the day my wife, Carolyn, saw an adult Bald Eagle carrying
nesting material. We expect our local bird probably is on eggs, since the
one at the Blackwater Camera site has had two eggs for a week or so.
A Cooper's Hawk likes our feeder arrangement, as do lots of Goldfinch,
House Finches and the other regular guests. And the lovey-dovey pair of
Black Vultures pushed the Coop off 'their' courting tree in our yard earlier
this morning. Ain't spring wonderful!
