This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday,
February 13. 

Top birds this week are RED-NECKED GREBE in MD, YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD in DE and BALTIMORE ORIOLE in MD and VA.

Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
AMERICAN BITTERN, GREEN HERON, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE,
PEREGRINE FALCON, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE, ICELAND, LESSER
BLACK-BACKED, and GLAUCOUS GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE,
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and
RUSTY BLACKBIRD. 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on Feb 8, 10, and 11 in Little Seneca Lake
in Black Hill Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD. Another was at North
East Town Park, Cecil Co, MD on Feb 9.

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was found in a large flock of blackbirds on
Rt. 5 near Milton, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 10.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES braved the cold in several spots across the region.
One was along the James River in Charles City Co, VA on Feb 10. Single
male BALTIMORE ORIOLES were seen at feeders in Reston, Fairfax Co, VA
on Feb 12 and Columbia, Howard Co, MD on Feb 7.

Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were in a pond on Study Road near
Westminster, Carroll Co, MD on Feb 9. Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE was seen near Staunton, VA. A ROSS'S GOOSE was reported in a
large flock of SNOW GEESE on Sassafras Road in southern Cecil Co, MD
on Feb 10.

CACKLING GEESE were found on the West Virginia side of the Potomac
River near Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD on Feb 9 and 10. Another was at
Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on Feb 11. Two CACKLING GEESE were found
in Greenbelt Lake, Prince Georges Co, MD on Feb 12.

A WOOD DUCK was in Lake Nirvana, near the entrance to the Lakelands
community, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Co, MD on Feb 11.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at the Ramp Road pond in Eastern Shore
NWR, Northampton Co, VA on Feb 11.

REDHEADS were spotted in many locations including Lake Elkhorn, Howard
Co, MD on Feb 6, Greenbelt Lake, Prince Georges Co, MD on Feb 6 and 9,
Silver Lake, Rehoboth Beach, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 7, Rt 309 near
Centreville, Queen Annes Co, MD on Feb 10, and the Potomac River from
Great Falls National Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Feb 11. 

A flock of 7 COMMON EIDERS continues on the south side of the jetty at
Ocean City inlet, Worcester Co, MD; they were seen on Feb 11 A male
HARLEQUIN DUCK was at island #1 of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel,
Northampton Co, VA on Feb 11. A BLACK SCOTER was found at Ft McHenry,
Baltimore, MD on Feb 6 and 8.

The AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS continue in residence at Blackwater NWR,
Dorchester Co, MD.

A GREEN HERON was seen in Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 7; a very early
record. An AMERICAN BITTERN was along Elliott Island Rd, Dorchester
Co, MD on Feb 11. Another was at Fowler's Beach road, Sussex Co, DE
the same day.

Three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were found in Highland Co, VA near Monterey
on Feb 10. Three GOLDEN EAGLES were seen in Highland Co on Feb 12. A
PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted along Paint Branch Trail, College Park,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Feb 12. 

A SPOTTED SANDPIPER was seen on Feb 11 and Feb 12 on Keep Tryst Road,
Weverton, Washington Co, MD.  Twenty five WILSON'S SNIPE were feeding
in a muddy field near the intersection of Bethards Road and Patey
Woods Road, Newark, Worcester Co, MD on Feb 11.
 
A second winter ICELAND GULL was at the Ocean City inlet, MD on Feb
10. A first winter GLAUCOUS GULL and 7 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were
found at the Salisbury Landfill, Wicomico Co, MD on Feb 10. An
immature GLAUCOUS GULL was in North East, Cecil Co, MD on Feb 11. An
immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Kerr Reservoir,
Mecklenburg Co, VA on Feb 11. A second winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
was found at Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park, Sussex Co, DE
on Feb 10 and two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were found the same
day along Prime Hook Beach Road, Sussex Co, DE. 

Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen near Bestpitch, Dorchester Co, MD on
Feb 10. Up to 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were found on Crenshaw Road near
Rectortown, Fauquier Co, VA on Feb 11 and 12.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was at Sky Meadows State Park, Fauquier Co, VA on
Feb 11. A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues on the entrance road to the
headquarters of Prime Hook NWR, DE. The bird has been reported from
various locations along the road; it was seen on Feb 10.

A BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was found in distress near Harrisonburg,
Rockingham Co, VA on Feb 7. Sadly, the bird did not survive despite
efforts to revive it.

Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at the corner of Oland Rd and
Buckeystown Rd near Frederick, Frederick Co, MD on Feb 10.

Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were found on the C and O Towpath near
McKee-Beshers WMA, Montgomery Co, MD on Feb 11.
