Eleanor,

I hesitate to recommend specific brands of scopes since everyone is
different and what I love, you might hate.

I would recommend 2 sites for your research, however. The first is
the Optics4Birding site:

http://www.optics4birding.com/

Here you can fill out a search questionnaire (how much you want to
spend, type of scope, brand, etc.) and then see a list of those that
match your criteria.

Another good site is Eagle Optics:

http://www.eagleoptics.com/index.asp

Here are a lot of excellent research reports, more information on
selecting optics, etc. and Eagle also puts together attractive
packages, including scope, eyepiece, and tripod, all in one.

Another site is Better View Desired:

http://betterviewdesired.com/

This is an optics review site (they don't sell here, just rate). They
do, however, tend to focus more on the high end optics, so you may not
find a lot of information on the scopes in your price range.

If at all possible I would recommend actually using your selections in
the field before making a final choice. Eagle Optics used to have a
try out option before you make the purchase final. You had to return
the scope in pristine condition, of course, but it is a chance to have
second thoughts about your significant investment. You will likely
need to call them about this program to see if it is still available.

Good luck with your search and let us know here on MDOsprey what your
final choice is!

Best,
Norm Saunders
