Nearly a year of persistence finally paid off this morning -- Horned
Larks at the dairy farm in Gambrills (Delorme 48, A1 -- mapquest.com also
gives a good view of the area if you search on Gambrills, MD). In addition to
getting a county close-out, I got a bonus county bird since 3 Lapland
Longspurs were mixed in with the flock of about 50-60 larks. Stan and Elaine
Arnold and Bill Hubick were also able to get to the farm to see both species.
The dairy farm is on the aptly named Dairy Farm Rd, accessible from Rt 175
between Odenton and Rt 3. I initially found the lark flock while viewing across
from the first intersection with Old Dairy Farm Rd. After Stan and Elaine
arrived, we moved a bit back down the road towards 175 to get a better view.
The birds were favoring the exposed dirt areas at the north end of the farm.
Most of the rest of the fields are snow covered. Viewing from the shoulder of
Dairy Farm Rd, we were generally scoping left towards the farm buildings.
There are a number of ridges in the field, so the birds go in and out of sight.
The sun is difficult in the morning.
