It was a weirdly wonderful weekend for birds:
On Saturday, 2/17, I observed a lone Lapland Longspur
among a group of Horned larks and sparrows scratching
along a roadside (Arnold Rd) that runs in front of the
Seventh Day Adventist Church near Burkittsville (FRED
CO) where I have observed larks previously. It was
quite aggressive toward the other birds for some
reason.
On Sunday, 2/18, while visiting Harpers Ferry NP and
observing the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah
in the afternoon snow squalls, an adult Bald Eagle
flew up the Potomac toward the park, then hung a left
and continued up the Shenandoah out of sight.
On Monday, 2/19, while in Hagerstown, I had a Flicker
fly into my windshield. I circled back to the site
and found the bird on its back with its feet quivering
in the air. It looked like curtains, but I thought at
the least I could salvage a study skin for one of the
local educational groups. I took the bird into the
car and found that it was still very much alive,
though I thought not for long. After driving a short
distance, the bird gave even more indication that it
was reviving. I stopped at the Funkstown PO about
five miles from the impact site and put the bird on
the ground where after a few tentative hops it finally
flew into a forested area. Although it may not
actually survive long term, I’m hoping for the best.
During the entire weekend, the feeders were full of
birds of the common varieties incl as many as 24+
cardinals at a time.
