Hi,

Today at Little Seneca Lake from the 121 bridge, I observed two ducks that looked to be white-winged scoters. Not what I would expect at the lake, so I sure would love to hear what other people think of these birds!

There were two large ducks (as in closer to Common Merganser size than Ruddy Duck size) swimming together. One had its head tucked the whole time. The other bird was a female or immature, dark brown, somewhat mottled on the sides. The face showed two white spots from the side, one closer to the bill, the other, more prominent being behind the eye. The head had a sloped forehead, merging seemlessly with the bill, but not as extremely sloped as a Canvasback. There was often visible a small patch of white at the wings, about two thirds of the way back along the length of the bird.

The second bird that remained tucked also appeared to have a white spot on the folded wings, although seeing this depended on the position of the bird to me. This bird also had a brown body, a little darker, I would say than its companion. But the tucked head was nearly black and contrasted with the rest of the body.

Also on the lake today there were at least 64 Tundra Swans. That was the best count I could get, but I think I may have missed a few. That is the most swans I have ever seen there.
